“Photo? Take photo please?” This is what you will hear constantly when visiting the city Medan as a foreigner. Now I know what it feels like to be a celebrity, I don’t want to be one…

When walking through the streets of Medan, you hear the local people laughing, pointing at you, waving, calling you and often approaching you. The first time it happened, the locals were very friendly and asked politely whether me and my friends wanted to take a picture with them. They were really thankful, which they mentioned many times. However, when it happened for the second, third, and fourth time, we were wondering what is so special about us foreigners? Not many foreigners seem to visit Medan, which makes the local people very surprised when they see one (or 24). When my friends and I were visiting a little park in Medan, I felt like I was in a human zoo. Before we could sit down, several people approached us. This caused a chain reaction, and made many others stand in line to take a picture with us! Celebrity for a day was tiring. The funny thing is, I might be on others’ Instagram page without even knowing it. #BlandasInMedan.
