During the International Field Project in 2024, students conducted research in Žabljak, Montenegro, focusing on tourism sustainability. Their study is titled “The Carrying Capacity of Žabljak and Its Diversification of Products,” which explores the relationship between land-based tourism activities, carrying capacity, and diversification strategies. The primary question was: “How do land-based ac
tivities affect the carrying capacity, and what is the potential of diversification as a sustainability strategy to keep tourism aligned with carrying capacity?”
The research combined primary data collection through interviews with tourists, tour agencies, and local stakeholders, alongside observations and secondary data analysis. It identified seasonality as a major challenge, with winter tourism declining due to unpredictable snowfall and limited infrastructure. To counter this, stakeholders proposed diversification strategies, including sustainable winter sports, spa hotels, and conference centers, to attract year-round visitors.
Findings highlighted the importance of infrastructure improvements and regulated development to balance tourism growth with environmental and social sustainability. Diversification, such as introducing new land-based activities and addressing seasonality, was recommended as a sustainable strategy for long-term tourism development in Žabljak.
