Project Description

This thesis explores the impact of allyship initiatives presented on Amsterdam-based hotel websites on the wellbeing and safety perceptions of LGBTQI+ travelers before their stay in Amsterdam. Recognizing the growing importance of inclusive practices in the hospitality industry, this research addresses the question: “How do hotel websites’ allyship initiatives influence the wellbeing and safety perceptions of LGBTQI+ travelers before their stay in Amsterdam?”. To answer this question, a mixed-methods approach was employed. A content analysis of various Amsterdam-based hotel websites was conducted to identify and categorize the types of allyship initiatives displayed. Complementing the content analysis, in-depth email interviews were conducted with six LGBTQI+ individuals who have recently traveled. These interviews provided insights into the travelers’ perceptions of safety and wellbeing in relation to the allyship messages they encountered on hotel websites prior to their stay. Findings from the content analysis revealed a spectrum of allyship initiatives, ranging from minimal to comprehensive efforts to support LGBTQI+ travelers. Interview data highlighted that travelers’ perceptions of safety and wellbeing are enhanced when hotels demonstrate clear and genuine allyship. Inclusive practices on hotel websites were found to contribute to a sense of belonging and security, which are crucial for the wellbeing of LGBTQI+ guests.
