Project Description

The growth of global tourism goes hand in hand with a global growth in tourism associated mobility. Tourism after all always involves tourists having to travel to, from, between and within destinations. Traditionally however tourism academia has paid little attention to mobility, especially when it concerns the role it plays when it comes to a tourist having a good tourist experience, which in turn is crucial for encouraging repeat visits and word of mouth advertising. To help make the relationship between mobility and the tourist experience clearer this paper consists of a systematic literature review on the topic. The PRISMA protocol has been used and the sources, which have all been exclusively collected from Scopus, have been critically analyzed. This study reveals a number of factors involved in mobility which shape the tourist experience, which can be largely divided into on the one hand the characteristics and sensory experiences originating from the mobility side and on the other hand every tourist’s unique preference and way of navigating these characteristics and sensory experiences. While this study goes a long way in describing this key relationship in tourism academia it also highlights the need for further research into the many gaps in the literature.
